About

Burghseyeview, which began as It’s a Burghs Eye View, is a podcast that my son Hutch III and I started in October of 2006. My brother Sto had kicked off a podcast, Puckertime out in Tacoma Washington and I listened and got the bug. We both came of age in the late 70’s and after I completed an active duty tour in the Army I returned home to find a city in severe economic decline…..I took a fulltime job with the Army Reserve in central Pennsyltucky and became a poster child of the Steeler Nation, my brother would go on to do the same in Tacoma. Burghseyeview is in part a vehicle to bring the Steeler Nation, still trapped in exile, a piece of home.
I grew up in the East End when Shadyside was a blend of blue collar and privilege. Walnut Street (The Way) had three grocery stores: Kroger’s (now Rite Aid), Indovina’s and the Shadyside Market which relocated to where one of the two gas stations were and is still in business today. Back in the day cops walked the beat; you could pick up the free Hit Parade at the Listening Post to see what songs made it to the top 25 and then go listen to them on 14 KQV or 13Q on your AM dial. You might even have heard Rush Limbaugh or Jim Quinn spinning the .45’s as they were both local DJ’s during the era.
When it came time to ditti mau I rolled out to the Army tiring of the aimless jobs at pizza shops (two syllables pi-chops) and garages and traveled to Ft Benning and the ROK that’s Ko-Rea. When I returned to da burgh there was little work and after standing in the unemployment line down E’sliberty I got one of those lessons in life that would stick with me forever. I watched prostitutes in line to get their handouts while their pimps bullshitted in the back of the room. Unreal. I left.
I took a job with the Army that sent me to Pennsylvania Dutch country and lived a rural life for the next 17 years. Those 17 years produced two beautiful children, a rugged individualist spirit, and the ability to live off the land, a whole lot of promotions and an extreme love of my Yinzer roots. I finally clawed my way back to the 412, and this time I could afford a case of beer other than Blatz. I had traveled the country, Korea and Honduras and finally eased back into Bloomfield…..wow this got way too biographical…
Back to the show. Listen to more than one episode. This show goes all over the map. I am an Army Officer with 27 years in our Army so I have some conservative leanings and they come out from time to time. I will never apologize for this, but the show is not about politics it’s about Pixburgh, it’s history and our irreverent spirit.
Burghseyeview started out as a show featuring Hutch Jr. and Hutch III, a father and son navigating through life in the Burgh. We began chronicling Hutch III’s high school football career and the antics of his crew. Hutch III is now attending Hiram College in Ohio and playing as a middle linebacker on the Terriers! Hutch Jr. recently returned from Iraq and shows 19-40 detail the entire deployment. Kick back and enjoy the show dedicated to all of the Steeler Nation trapped in other parts of our country and world. If you have ever eaten a jumbo sammich, gambled in the basement of a catholic church, engaged in a buckeye fight, or ridden a PAT bus, come check us out. Some of the highlights of the show include the PAT Bus Vocabulary Moment, The Bloomfield Update, Pixburgh Originals and the newly instituted Scanner Segment. To our hardcore listeners: Thanks N@…….Burghseyeview.
